How this list was compiled: Connecticut General Statutes, chapter 700f (Bail Bond Insurance, Secs. 38a-660 to 38a-660m), Secs. 38a-11 and 38a-38 (chapter 697), 38a-774 (chapter 702), 38a-816 and 38a-825 (chapter 704) and 54-65a (chapter 960), read on October 15, 2026 in the General Assembly's published copy (https://www.cga.ct.gov/current/pub/chap_700f.htm and the chapters named), and the Connecticut Judicial Branch glossary Common Legal Words (https://www.jud.ct.gov/legalterms.htm). The three topics and the sections asked follow the Surety Bail Bond Agent content outline (60 scoreable questions; effective September 1, 2026) in the state's insurance examination content outlines, which the Connecticut Insurance Department's licensing pages point candidates to (https://www.pearsonvue.com/us/en/ct/insurance.html). Each question names its section and links to it. Licence: Own work. The four parts of the exam

The outline gives general duties and definitions 20 of its 60 scored questions, principles and practices 20, fiduciary responsibilities 10 and surety contracts 10.

Numbers the statute sets

Build-up funds stop at 40 per cent of the premium. Collateral goes back within 21 days of the court's report that the bond ended (Secs. 38a-660f, 38a-660h).

What is left out

Surety contract theory and the legal terms the outline takes from a law dictionary are not asked; five terms come from the Judicial Branch glossary instead.

  • Certify under oath by the tenth of each month that last month's premiums matched the approved rate (Sec. 38a-660b).
  • Never solicit on courthouse or correctional grounds without a request; a police station is allowed (Sec. 38a-660j).
  • Pay the $450 yearly fee by January 31 or the license expires February 1 (Sec. 38a-660).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Connecticut bail bond exam?

The Surety Bail Bond Agent content outline lists 60 scoreable questions. The state's candidate handbook gives the examination one hour and says the passing score on the bail bond examination is 80 percent.

How do I become a bail bondsman in Connecticut?

By the Insurance Department's steps: finish the 25-hour surety bail bond pre-licensing course, pass the examination, apply online, be fingerprinted, then secure a surety company appointment before executing bonds. Sec. 38a-660 asks for age 18 and United States citizenship.

Can a felon be a bail bondsman in Connecticut?

No. An applicant must never have been convicted of a disqualifying offense, and a felony is one. So is a misdemeanor with an element of dishonesty or misappropriation of money or property (Sec. 38a-660(a)(3), (h)).

How much do bail bondsmen charge in Connecticut?

The premium rate the Insurance Commissioner approves, no less and no more. A payment plan needs at least 35 per cent of the premium down and a promissory note for the balance, due within 15 months (Secs. 38a-660b, 38a-660c).
