How it works
Minnesota sets no written examination for the bail bonds license; the State Court Administrator approves each agent. This unofficial Minnesota bail bond agent practice test is 77 questions of our own on Rule 702 and the bail statutes. Not affiliated with the Minnesota Judicial Branch.

One approval for every court
Approval by the State Court Administrator's Office lets an agent issue bail bonds throughout Minnesota, and a suspension or revocation applies statewide too. A judge keeps discretion over approving any one bond (Minn. Gen. R. Prac. 702(a)).
Deadlines to know
No forfeited bond is reinstated unless the petition is filed within 180 days of the forfeiture order, and on one filed after 90 days reinstatement carries a penalty of at least 10% of the bail. Approval renews every two years, by June 1 for a June 30 expiration (Rule 702(f); Procedure 504(a), section V).
What is left out
The Department of Commerce's consent order on premiums, the insurance trade practice statutes and local court orders are not asked.
Report a criminal charge or conviction to the State Court Administrator's Office within 30 days (Procedure 504(a), section VI).
No soliciting, business cards or rate talk in the courtroom or court areas of the courthouse (Procedure 504(a), section VI).
Notify the sheriff before surrendering an arrested defendant to the judge; the surety pays the sheriff's fees (Minn. Stat. 629.63, 629.65).
Questions and answers
Is there a bail bond agent exam in Minnesota?
No written examination. Minn. Stat. 60K.36, subd. 2 says a resident applying for a bail bonds limited lines license is not required to take one. The State Court Administrator's Office then approves agents on an application and background check.
How do I become a bail bond agent in Minnesota?
Get a Department of Commerce license in the bail bonds line, a bonding agency affiliation and a surety appointment. Then file a New Bail Bond Agent Application and a Bureau of Criminal Apprehension background check with the State Court Administrator's Office.
How long does a surety have to pay a forfeited bond in Minnesota?
90 days from the order of forfeiture. Unpaid after that, the surety and its agent are suspended statewide, and the suspension runs 30 days from the day the principal is deposited with the court administrator (Rule 702(e), (h)).
Can a felon be a bail bondsman in Minnesota?
Not automatically barred. The Bail Bond Procedures list a felony conviction as a ground for denial, but staff apply the rehabilitation standards of Minn. Stat. 364.03, and the program's FAQ says convictions are weighed with the rest of the application.
