How this list was compiled: Hawaii Revised Statutes chapter 431, article 9N (Bail agents; sureties) and sections of article 9A (insurance producer licensing), and chapter 804 (Bail; Bond to Keep the Peace), sections 804-1 to 804-17, 804-41, 804-51 and 804-62, read on October 14, 2026 in the Hawaii State Legislature's published copy (https://data.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol14_Ch0701-0853/HRS0804/HRS_0804-.htm and https://data.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol09_Ch0431-0435H/HRS0431/HRS_0431-0009N-0101.htm). Each question names its section and links to that section's page. The examination facts come from the State of Hawaii Examination Candidate Handbook (January 2026) and its content outlines (effective January 1, 2026), which the Insurance Division's Examination Information page points to (https://cca.hawaii.gov/ins/producers-exam_info/). How it works

The bail part of the Surety outline
Part V, Bail Bonds, lists the surety bail bond, the surety bond fee, types of bail (real property, cash, bail bond), the bail piece, acceptable collateral, appeal bonds and the appointing company's underwriting standard. Part VI, Hawaii insurance law, includes HRS 431:9N, Bail agents; sureties, and the producer licensing article 9A.
What is left out
Statute only. The surety examination's contract, surety bond and fidelity bond subjects and HRS 431 articles 2, 10F and 13, the Hawaii Rules of Penal Procedure and the peace bond sections, HRS 804-31 to 804-40, are not asked.
Premiums go to the insurer by the contract's due date or, without one, within 45 days of receipt (HRS 431:9N-103).
Real property offered as security must be worth at least double the bail bond (HRS 804-11.5).
Questions and answers
Is there a bail bond agent exam in Hawaii?
Not under that name. A surety-only applicant takes the Surety Producer examination: 35 scored questions, 45 minutes, a scaled score of 70 to pass, by the state's candidate handbook.
How do I become a bail bondsman in Hawaii?
By HRS 431:9N-101: hold an insurance producer license under article 9A, be appointed by an authorized surety insurer, and hold its power of attorney to execute or countersign bail bonds. The surety class takes the surety line of authority (HRS 431:9A-103).
How much does a bail bondsman charge in Hawaii?
A one-time fee of 5 to 15 per cent of the bond, which need not be less than $50. Additional fees may be collected for a surety insurance bond, a bond pending appeal or a bond older than one year (HRS 804-62).
What happens when a bail bond is forfeited in Hawaii?
The court enters judgment for the State at once. Execution issues 30 days after notice to the surety unless a motion showing good cause is filed; if it is sustained and the principal surrendered, the bond is returned less the State's costs (HRS 804-51).
