How this list was compiled: Every question rests on one section of Illinois law, read on 2026-10-04 and named in the question's own source line. The Liquor Control Act of 1934, 235 ILCS 5, read on the Illinois General Assembly's site, https://www.ilga.gov/Documents/legislation/ilcs/documents/ : sections 1-3.05, 4-1, 6-16, 6-16.1, 6-16.2, 6-20, 6-21, 6-27.1, 6-28 and 6-28.5. The Illinois Liquor Control Commission's rule on BASSET programs, 77 Ill. Adm. Code 3500.155, read on the General Assembly's administrative code pages, https://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/admincode/077/077035000001550R.html . No statute or rule read gives a number of questions or a pass mark for a BASSET course test, and the bank stores none. The dram shop dollar limits change every January 20, so no question asks for a dollar amount. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute and rule text; nothing is copied from a BASSET-licensed training program or another practice test. Short quotations from the law are marked.

How it works

This unofficial Illinois BASSET certification study guide holds 45 practice questions from the Liquor Control Act and the commission's BASSET rule, each naming its section. BASSET-licensed programs teach the course and give its test; this bank is state law only.

What a BASSET course covers, and what is here

77 Ill. Adm. Code 3500.155 names five areas: alcohol and drugs, prevention and intervention, state law and DUI law, identification, and dram shop liability. This bank drills the law: who must train, the certificate, people under 21, the dram shop section and the happy hour rules.

Training deadlines and the certificate

Section 6-27.1 gives a new server 120 days from starting work. A certificate from a BASSET-licensed program lasts 3 years, belongs to the server and can move to a new employer. The statute sets no pass mark for the course test, so this page sets none; Exam mode draws 25, this site's choice.

  • Classroom courses run at least 4 hours, in English and Spanish; online courses cannot let you skip content.
  • Discounted drinks: at most 4 hours a day and 15 a week, never from 10 p.m. to closing, posted 7 days ahead.
  • Local ordinances set hours of sale in Illinois, so this bank asks no closing time.

Questions and answers

How long is BASSET certification good for?

3 years. Section 6-27.1(g) says a responsible alcohol service training certificate from a BASSET-licensed program is valid for 3 years. There is no limit on how many times a server may take the training.

Who needs BASSET training in Illinois?

Alcohol servers: people who sell or serve open containers of alcohol at retail, deliver mixed drinks under section 6-28.8, or check ID for those sales or for entry. Volunteers at charitable functions and special event retailers are among the exceptions.

How long do new servers have to get BASSET trained?

120 days after starting work, under section 6-27.1(a). The section's county start dates, the last being July 1, 2018, have all passed. Proof of training must be available on reasonable request by State law enforcement.

Are these the real BASSET test questions?

No. They are unofficial practice written from the Liquor Control Act and 77 Ill. Adm. Code 3500. The Illinois Liquor Control Commission and the licensed programs did not write or review them, and this site has never seen a course test.
