Who gives the Colorado test?

Trainers the Division approves, not the state itself. Regulation 47-605 sets the responsible vendor course: at least two hours, then a written test on its curriculum. Colorado issues no server permit.

Where the law requires the training

A person who pours at a liquor store tasting, a driver who delivers takeout drinks and a liquor-licensed drugstore must have it (C.R.S. 44-3-301, 44-3-911, 44-3-410). For other licensees it is a mitigating factor when a penalty is set.

The law items of the curriculum

Minors and identification, visibly intoxicated patrons, liability, hours, ages of staff, takeout and removing drinks from the premises. Alcohol's effects and intervention techniques are course subjects, not law, and are not asked.

  • Adequate identification carries a picture and a date of birth (Regulation 47-912).
  • A fraudulent proof of age may be confiscated and goes to law enforcement within 72 hours (C.R.S. 44-3-901(6)(a)).
  • One opened bottle of wine, 750 milliliters at most, may leave resealed with a cork or commercial stopper (C.R.S. 44-3-423, Regulation 47-918).

Questions and answers

How old do you have to be to serve alcohol in Colorado?

18, supervised by someone at least 21 who is on the premises. In a tavern that does not regularly serve meals, the seller must be 21 (C.R.S. 44-3-901(6)(p)).

What time do bars stop serving alcohol in Colorado?

2 a.m. Drinks may not be sold or consumed on the premises between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m.; sealed containers sell from 8 a.m. to midnight (C.R.S. 44-3-901(6)(b), Regulation 47-910).

What is the passing score for Colorado responsible vendor training?

70 percent or better on the written test (Regulation 47-605). Exam mode here applies that mark to 25 questions; the regulation sets no number of questions.

How long is Colorado responsible vendor training good for?

Two years. Regulation 47-605 has a seller or server recertify every two years, by a test, a recertification course or the initial course again.

Does Colorado have a dram shop law?

C.R.S. 44-3-801 limits it: a licensee is liable only for willfully and knowingly serving a person under 21 or visibly intoxicated, and the action must begin within one year. Test practice, not legal advice.
