How this list was compiled: Questions: California Vehicle Code, read section by section on the California Legislature's own site (https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes.xhtml) on 2026-10-04, Divisions 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 and 12. Each amendment line quoted in an explanation is the one printed under the section that day (for example section 12814 as amended by Stats. 2026, Ch. 82 (SB 169), effective July 13, 2026). Exam-format facts on the page (a renewal knowledge test of 25 questions, the eLearning course) come from the California DMV page https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/special-interest-driver-guides/senior-drivers/ , read 2026-10-04; no question is written from it. Who gives the CA DMV renewal test

The California Department of Motor Vehicles. Its Senior Drivers page, read October 4, 2026, says a driver aged 70 or older might not need a test and should check the renewal notice. An in-person written test for a renewal is 25 questions.

What this CA DMV practice test for seniors asks

Three topics: renewal, reexamination and hearing law; sections changed since 2013, each with its bill and date; and rules of the road. No question repeats our California permit bank.

Other states

For a drivers license renewal practice test on another state's law, pick that state's bank on permit practice tests by state.

  • Section 12816(b): a renewal is applied for within six months before the license expires or within 90 days after.
  • Section 12814.5(c): a renewal by mail shall not be granted to any person who is 70 years of age or older.
  • Each amended section in the second topic names the bill that changed it and the day the change took effect.

Questions and answers

Is this the California DMV renewal test?

No. The California Department of Motor Vehicles gives the knowledge test, and this is an unofficial practice bank. Its questions are written from the Vehicle Code on leginfo.legislature.ca.gov, and none is copied from the department's tests or handbook.

Is there an 18 question DMV renewal test?

Not on the department's Senior Drivers page as read on October 4, 2026. It says a renewal written test is 25 questions. Exam mode here draws 25 and shows no pass mark, because that page gives none.

What is the California driving test for seniors at renewal?

The department's page describes a knowledge test, where the renewal notice asks for one. It lists two ways: an eLearning course of seven short sections with quizzes, or the 25 question written test at an office. This page practices Vehicle Code questions only.

Is this California DMV senior practice test printable?

Yes. After a round, press Print, then Add all for a full test on paper. The department's page says its own English written test may be requested in larger print at an office.

Does it cover the DMV re-examination written test?

Only the law around it. The first topic asks about notices of reexamination and hearings under sections 12818, 13800 to 13802, 14100 to 14105 and 21062. The department decides what a reexamination contains, and this page does not describe it.
