How this list was compiled: Written from California Vehicle Code Division 5, Chapter 1, Driving Schools and Driving Instructors (sections 11100 to 11114), read on 2026-10-04 on the Legislature's site at https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displayText.xhtml?lawCode=VEH&division=5.&title=&part=&chapter=1.&article= . Four questions rest on the Department of Motor Vehicles' Driving School Instructor License page, read the same day, and say so. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text and the department's page; nothing is copied from the department's examination, from a study guide or from another practice test. Short quotations from the statute are marked.
How it works
The California DMV says an instructor applicant takes a written exam, and one subject on its list is "Driving school statutes and regulations." These unofficial law questions practice that subject from Vehicle Code sections 11100 to 11114.

What the law questions cover
Chapter 1 of Division 5 of the Vehicle Code is the driving school chapter. Six groups under Start from follow it: who needs a license, instructor qualifications, term and fees, schools and vehicles, records, and refusal or suspension.
What the written exam also covers
The department's page also lists traffic laws, safe driving practices, safe operation of motor vehicles, first aid and teaching methods. This page asks none of those. The California permit practice test asks the rules of the road.
Fees in the statute and fees charged
Fee questions give the amounts printed in section 11105.2. The department's license page lists what it charges today.
Each explanation names its section. Statutes are amended, so the section itself has the last word.
The driving school regulations in Title 13 of the California Code of Regulations were not read for this page.
Questions and answers
Are these the real California driving instructor test questions?
No. The Department of Motor Vehicles did not write or review these, and nothing here is copied from its examination. Each question was written for this site from the Vehicle Code section it names.
What is on the California driving instructor written exam?
The department's page lists traffic laws, safe driving practices, safe operation of motor vehicles, first aid, teaching methods and techniques, and driving school statutes and regulations. This page practices only the last of those.
How many times can you take the driving instructor exam?
Three. Section 11104(a)(2) says an applicant must pass within three attempts, and the department's page says that after three a new application, fee and exam are required.
How old do you have to be to be a driving instructor in California?
At least 21, under section 11104(a)(7). The same section asks for a high school education or its equivalent and a valid California driver's license in a class appropriate for the vehicle taught in.
How long is a California driving instructor license good for?
Three years from the date issued, under section 11105.1. The section also says that in no event shall an instructor renew the license after the date of expiration.
