What the questions cover
The Start from menu has five parts: the certificate and who needs one, refusal and revocation, the ambulance's license, lamps and siren, the emergency exemption and the rules of the road, and crew, records and dispatch. Each answer links to its section.
What is left out
This practice ambulance drivers test is law only. It has nothing on how to drive in an emergency, on patient care or on first aid. The Ambulance Driver Handbook (HPH 82.4) was not opened, so no question rests on it or repeats it.
Section 21055 questions turn on two things: the kind of trip, and siren with red lamp.
Note which agency acts: the DMV issues the certificate, the Highway Patrol licenses the ambulance.

Questions and answers
Is this CA ambulance drivers license practice test from the DMV?
No. It is unofficial practice written from California statutes and regulations. The California Department of Motor Vehicles and the California Highway Patrol did not write or review this page, and no question comes from a state test or handbook.
Does California issue an ambulance drivers license?
The state's paper is the ambulance driver certificate. Vehicle Code section 12527 says a person operating an ambulance carries a driver license for the class of vehicle and the certificate, unless one of the section's exemptions applies.
Is there a written test for the certificate?
Section 12527 says the certificate is issued only upon successful completion of an examination conducted by the department. The DMV's certificates page, read October 4, 2026, lists passing an Ambulance Driver Certification examination. This page prints no question count or passing score.
Can I use it as an ambulance license practice test in another state?
Only as general reading. Every answer here is California law, and another state's rules for ambulance drivers come from that state's own statutes and agencies. Nothing here is legal advice.
Who needs no certificate to drive an ambulance in California?
Section 12527 exempts salaried, regular, full-time police officers, deputy sheriffs and fire department members acting in the line of duty. It excludes volunteers, part-time employees and members whose duties are primarily clerical or administrative.
