The course facts (the 10-hour minimum, the course options and their ages, the 75% final exam of the adult online-only course) are the Iowa Department of Natural Resources' own, read the same day on its Hunter Education & Safety page at https://www.iowadnr.gov/things-do/hunting-trapping/hunter-education-safety; that page and section 483A.27 are the published outline this page follows. The department publishes no question count, pass mark or time limit for the classroom test, so none is given here. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the Iowa Code and the commission's rules and the facts on the department's public page; nothing is copied from a hunter education manual, a study guide, an online course, a chapter review or an examination.

Rules that are Iowa's own
Deer hunters with firearms wear solid blaze orange on the body. Deer shooting hours run from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. A deer is tagged within 15 minutes of being found. No shooting at game within 200 yards of an inhabited building or a feedlot without the owner's or tenant's consent.
What the test is
Iowa Code 483A.27 has each student pass an oral or written test from the Department of Natural Resources, and the instructor also looks for safe firearm handling. The bank covers law only.
A hunting incident with a firearm that injures someone is reported to the county sheriff's office or the department within 12 hours.
Upland bird hunters may meet the orange rule with a hat. Deer hunters with firearms may not.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Iowa hunter safety test?
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources does not publish a question count or a pass mark for the classroom test. Its adult online-only course ends in a final exam that takes 75% or better to pass.
Who needs hunter education in Iowa?
Anyone born after January 1, 1972, before obtaining a hunting license, under Iowa Code 483A.27. A hunter under 16 with a licensed adult needs no hunting license. A person 16 or older may buy an apprentice license, twice at most, and hunt with a mentor.
How old do you have to be to take hunter safety in Iowa?
Eleven. Iowa Code 483A.27 lets a person who is 11 or older enroll, and a certificate earned at 11 becomes valid on the twelfth birthday. The department offers the online course with a field day to ages 11 to 17.
Is this the official Iowa hunters ed test?
No. It is unofficial and not affiliated with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The questions are our own, written from the Iowa Code and the Natural Resource Commission's rules; none comes from the department's test or its manual.
