How this list was compiled: Rhode Island General Laws Title 5, Chapter 65.1, the Rhode Island Home Inspector Licensing Law, sections 5-65.1-1 to 5-65.1-14 (the General Assembly's own pages, https://webserver.rilegislature.gov/Statutes/TITLE5/5-65.1/INDEX.htm), and the Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board's Rules and Regulations for Home Inspectors and Associate Home Inspectors, 440-RICR-10-00-5, the active rule effective February 22, 2026 (the Secretary of State's Code of Regulations, https://rules.sos.ri.gov/regulations/part/440-10-00-5), both read on October 14, 2026. The Board's license page (https://crb.ri.gov/licenses/home-inspectorassociate-home-inspector-license) was read the same day. Each question names its section and links to its source. How it works

This unofficial Rhode Island home inspector license practice test asks what state law says: 113 of our own questions from General Laws Chapter 5-65.1 and the Board's rules. Not affiliated with the Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board.

Read the full guide

What the questions cover

The Licensing Law section by section: who needs a license, the associate license, the two $500,000 insurance policies, discipline and penalties. Then Part 5 of the Board's rules: definitions, continuing education, the standards of practice system by system, the prohibitions and the ethics rules.

What is left out

How building systems work and fail. The Board's rules name a national examination for that, and no Rhode Island statute or rule states it, so it is not asked here.

  • A contract clause that limits liability below the insurance minimum is void in contracts issued on or after September 1, 2016 (Section 5-65.1-10(c)).
  • Reporting on market value or the cost of repairs is prohibited, not just outside the inspection (Part 5, section 5.24.7).
  • Keep a copy of every report for at least three years (Part 5, section 5.24.11).

Questions and answers

What exam does Rhode Island require for a home inspector license?

An examination approved or administered by the Board (Section 5-65.1-4). The Board's rules define it as the national home inspectors' examination, given by the Board or a Board-approved third party, and the application asks for proof of passing.

Does Rhode Island have its own home inspector exam?

The Board's rules name a national examination, and neither the statute nor the rules state a question count or pass mark. The 50-question test offered here is this site's choice, on Rhode Island law only.

How do you become a home inspector in Rhode Island?

Finish high school, work a year as a licensed associate with 100 paid inspections (or five years as a registered contractor), pass the examination, file $500,000 errors and omissions and general liability certificates, and pay the $200 fee (Sections 5-65.1-4, 5-65.1-9, 5-65.1-10).

What is an associate home inspector in Rhode Island?

A licensee who inspects under the direct supervision of the licensed home inspector who employs them. The license takes high school, 50 inspections assisted in a licensed inspector's presence, and the examination (Sections 5-65.1-2, 5-65.1-5).

How long is a Rhode Island home inspector license good for?

Two years, for a $200 fee at issue and at each renewal (Section 5-65.1-9). Renewal takes 12 credit hours of continuing education, at least one on ethics and one on standards of practice (Part 5, section 5.8).
