How it works

NJ ASK is no longer given: third graders in New Jersey now take the NJSLA. This unofficial practice has 41 grade 3 math questions, all our own, from the state's 2023 standards. Not affiliated with the New Jersey Department of Education.

What the grade 3 NJSLA math test covers

The state's blueprint sets a least and a most for four reporting categories out of 41 items, and the questions here sit inside every range. Operations and Algebraic Thinking has 13: multiplying and dividing within 100, unknown factors, two-step word problems and patterns. Base ten and fractions share 11: rounding, adding and subtracting within 1,000, unit fractions, number lines and comparing. Measurement has 11: time, liters and grams, area and perimeter. Geometry and Data Literacy has 6.

A standard under every answer

An answer shows its steps and its New Jersey standard, such as 3.OA.A.3. The 2023 standards code measurement 3.M and data literacy 3.DL.

  • The standards keep grade 3 fractions to denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8.

Questions and answers

Are there still NJ ASK practice tests for grade 3?

NJ ASK is no longer given, so no new ones are made. New Jersey's testing history page says PARCC tests replaced the NJASK in grades 3 to 8 in 2014-15. Grade 3 now takes the NJSLA-A, which these questions practice.

When did third graders first take NJ ASK?

The state's history page says grade 3 NJ ASK was field-tested in May 2003 and fully operational the next year. It was added to meet federal testing rules and the state's aim that students read at grade level by the end of grade 3.

How many questions are on the grade 3 NJSLA math test?

41 items. The test is adaptive, so the blueprint gives each reporting category a range: 12 to 14 items for Operations and Algebraic Thinking, 10 to 12 each for base ten with fractions and for Measurement, and 5 to 7 for Geometry and Data Literacy.

How long is the NJSLA math test in grade 3?

150 minutes. The state's unit testing times page gives NJSLA-A mathematics two sessions of 75 minutes each.

Where is the state's own grade 3 NJSLA practice test?

On the New Jersey Assessments Portal: choose Practice Tests, continue as a guest and pick grade 3. The state says those tests are for getting used to the platform and its tools and are not meant for studying.
