What is in each grade
Every grade has six mathematics questions spread over that grade's blueprint categories, and six English language arts questions: two on a story, two on an informational text, one on research and one on writing conventions. Each passage was written for this page. Grades 5 and 8, the two grades Missouri tests in science, add six science questions, two each from physical, life, and Earth and space science.
How the answers are checked
Each question names the Missouri Learning Standard it practices, such as 4.NF.B.6. Math answers are worked out a second time. Reading answers rest on the passage printed with the question, and science answers on the wording of Missouri's science standards or a named federal page.
Calculators are not allowed on the mathematics test in grades 3 to 5, so work those sets by hand.
One English language arts session is a listening strand taken with headphones, which a page of text cannot practice.
Questions and answers
Is there a DESE MAP practice test?
Yes. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education posts paper practice forms with scoring guides for each grade and subject on its Grade-Level page, linked under the questions. This page is separate and unofficial.
What grades take the Missouri MAP test?
All students in grades 3 to 8 take the Grade-Level Assessment. English language arts and mathematics are given in every grade, and science in grades 5 and 8. High school courses have end-of-course assessments.
How long is the MAP test in Missouri?
It is split into sessions. The state's timing guidelines estimate 15 to 130 minutes a session, by grade and subject: three or four sessions in English language arts, three in mathematics and two in science.
How is the Missouri MAP test scored?
Results are scale scores in four performance levels: Below Basic, Basic, Proficient and Advanced. English language arts runs from 160 to 650 and mathematics from 185 to 660.
Is the Missouri MAP test the same as NWEA MAP Growth?
No. Missouri's MAP is the Missouri Assessment Program, the state's own tests on the Missouri Learning Standards. MAP Growth is a separate test published by NWEA. The two share only the three letters.
