What the Virginia state board exam covers

Virginia's candidate handbook, read October 12, 2026, counts the 60 scored questions by area, from 21 on basic nursing skills and 13 on activities of daily living down to 1 on spiritual and cultural needs. The bank holds the same counts.

Virginia's own rules

Twelve more questions cover Virginia's certification rules: a two-year first certificate, yearly renewal, 30 days to report a new address and 120 hours of training.

Where the answers come from

51 questions are checked against Virginia's rules for nursing facilities (12VAC5-371), the board's rules (18VAC90-25) and the Code of Virginia. The rest name the handbook, the CDC, MedlinePlus or an NIH institute.

  • Virginia's rules have a restrained resident checked at least every 30 minutes and given 10 minutes of each hour for motion, exercise and elimination.

Questions and answers

What is on the Virginia CNA state board exam?

Two parts, by Virginia's candidate handbook: a Written (or Oral) Examination of 70 multiple-choice questions, 10 of them unscored, and a Skills Evaluation. Both must be passed to be listed on the Virginia Nurse Aide Registry.

What is the Virginia CNA skills test?

The Skills Evaluation: five skills rated by a Nurse Aide Evaluator. Handwashing is always one and the other four are chosen at random, by the handbook. For questions on skill steps, see CNA skills practice questions.

How many times can you take the CNA state board test in Virginia?

Three. Under 18VAC90-25-71, an applicant who fails the examination in three attempts, or does not take both parts within two years of training, completes another approved nurse aide program before reapplying.

Who gives the CNA state board exam in VA?

Credentia gives the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) examination for the Virginia Board of Nursing. The board's nurse aide page calls it the Virginia Nurse Aide Competency Test, or State Board.

Are these the real Virginia CNA exam questions?

No. Federal rule 42 CFR 483.154 keeps the real pool from being disclosed. These are our own questions, written from Virginia's regulations and other public pages. The handbook's sample questions and self-assessment were not used.
