How it works
This unofficial Oregon cosmetology practice test asks state law and Board of Cosmetology rules only, written from ORS chapter 690 and OAR chapter 817 as read on October 4, 2026. Hair, skin and nail theory from textbooks is not here.

What the Oregon law and rules questions cover
Seven groups: certificates and examinations, renewal and status, facilities, safety and infection control, scope of practice and exemptions, prohibited acts and penalties, and the Board and the Office. Safety and infection control is the largest. Use the topic filter to drill one group; missed questions collect in their own pile.
How the bank follows the office's own outline
The Health Licensing Office's examination bulletin (revised March 1, 2014, and linked from its license pages on October 4, 2026) lists seven domains for the Oregon Laws and Rules examination: definitions, facility standards, practice standards, facility operations, examinations, licensing and certification, and chemicals. Facility standards is the largest. This bank asks from the statutes and rules that bulletin names.
- A certificate lasts two years. A facility license and an independent contractor registration last one (OAR 817-006-0001, 817-007-0000, 817-007-0225).
- Sharp-edged tools and clipper blades take a high-level disinfectant; combs, brushes and electrical tools other than clipper blades take a low-level one (OAR 817-010-0068, 817-010-0069).
- A registration or freelance license that is not renewed goes dormant, not inactive, and is not valid (OAR 817-008-0000).
Questions and answers
Is there a free Oregon cosmetology practice test?
This page is one: free practice questions on Oregon cosmetology law and Board of Cosmetology rules, with the statute or rule section under every answer. It is unofficial and is not the state examination.
How many questions are on the Oregon laws and rules exam?
The Health Licensing Office's examination bulletin, revised March 1, 2014, lists 90 questions and a 90-minute time limit. OAR 817-006-0075 sets the passing score at 75 percent or better. Check the office's own site before you test.
Does this cover the hair design, esthetics or nail technology written exam?
No. Those examinations ask the theory of each field, which this page leaves out. Every question here comes from Oregon statutes and Board of Cosmetology rules, the subject of the separate Oregon Laws and Rules examination.
Are these the real Oregon exam questions?
No. This site has never seen the state examination. The questions were written from ORS chapters 690 and 676 and OAR chapter 817, and the Oregon Health Licensing Office and its Board of Cosmetology did not write or review them.
