What the state's outline lists

The Department's candidate bulletin spreads the closed book stationary steam engineer examination over thirteen subject areas, from the steam cycle and boiler design to turbines and math formulas. Boiler design and math formulas carry the most, seven items each.

What this bank covers

Thirty-nine questions come from Ohio's own law: who needs which license, the examination and fees, attendance and inspections. The steam engineer outline lists no law area. Thirty-seven come from the U.S. Department of Energy's steam sourcebook: boilers, combustion, devices, auxiliaries and turbines.

What is left out

The bulletin's reference books are privately published and none was used, so the math formulas area and environmental control are not asked here.

  • Two numbers decide most license questions: above 15 psig is a power boiler, and over 360 square feet of heating surface needs a licensed operator.
  • The low pressure license does not reach a power boiler, and only the steam engineer license reaches engines above 30 horsepower.
  • The application goes in 30 to 60 days before the examination (R.C. 4104.19).

Questions and answers

Is there an Ohio boiler license practice test here?

Yes. The Ohio law topics apply to all three licenses: low pressure boiler operator, high pressure boiler operator and steam engineer. The boiler, combustion and device topics match subject areas the bulletin lists for the two high pressure examinations.

What does an Ohio boiler license test study guide need to cover?

By the bulletin, the low pressure examination has 30 questions on boiler devices, feed water, heating sources, steam distribution, draft, water treatment, operation, safety and Ohio laws and rules. The high pressure examination has 40, from the steam cycle to pumps and environmental control.

How many questions are on the Ohio stationary steam engineer exam?

Fifty, with 70% required to pass, by the candidate information bulletin linked from the Department of Commerce boiler page. All three examinations allow three hours. The bulletin, last revised July 1, 2011, adds that five to ten unscored pretest questions may be given.

Who can take the Ohio steam engineer exam?

R.C. 4104.19 asks for an applicant at least 18 with one year of experience operating steam engines, or a mix of experience and education the superintendent of industrial compliance accepts.

Are these questions from the real Ohio exam?

No. Each was written for this page from the Revised Code, the Administrative Code or a U.S. Department of Energy sourcebook. None comes from the state examination, and the Ohio Department of Commerce did not review this page.
