  • Which test fills a closed vessel with water and applies a pressure above its working pressure? TM 9-237 (1976), chapter 10, paragraph 10-11

How this list was compiled: Safety questions rest on the federal welding rules: 29 CFR part 1910 subpart Q (sections 1910.252 to 1910.255, general industry) and 29 CFR part 1926 subpart J (sections 1926.350 to 1926.354, construction), read on 2026-10-04 at https://www.ecfr.gov. Theory questions rest on Department of the Army Technical Manual TM 9-237, Operator's Manual: Welding Theory and Application, the October 1976 edition, read on 2026-10-04 in the scan at https://archive.org/details/micro_IA41152616_0592. Each question's source line gives the paragraph. Licence: Questions, choices and explanations are original work of this site. The regulations and the Army manual are works of the United States government.

How it works

A written welding practice test in two halves: a welding safety test from the federal rules, and theory from a 1976 Army manual. These basic welding questions and answers cannot stand in for a hands-on bend test.

What is left out

Questions on a private welding code are left out, and so are welding symbols and arithmetic. No certifier's exam is copied. Welder test questions set by an employer or a school follow their own material.

Ten topics

The Start from menu under the question sets one. Five are safety: fire prevention, eye protection, ventilation, gas cylinders and arc equipment. Five are theory: processes with the MIG welding test questions, joints, oxyacetylene flames, arc welding questions on electrodes and polarity, and weld testing.

A study guide in question form

Each explanation names its section or paragraph, so the bank doubles as a welding study guide. The theory keeps the terms of the 1976 edition.

  • Set one safety topic for a short welding safety quiz, or leave all ten on for a mixed welding quiz.
  • The Missed pile, under More options, keeps what you got wrong. Clear my progress, under More options, erases what this browser keeps.

Questions and answers

What is on a written weld test?

Whoever sets it decides: an employer, a school or a certifying body writes its own welding written test. This page covers two public sources only, the federal welding safety rules in 29 CFR and Army manual TM 9-237.

Is this a welding certification practice test?

It is written practice only and cannot stand in for a hands-on test such as a bend test. No certifier is involved here, and no question comes from a private welding code or a real exam.

Are these welding test questions and answers from a real exam?

No. Every question was written for this site from 29 CFR part 1910 subpart Q, 29 CFR part 1926 subpart J and TM 9-237. Lists sold as real welding exam questions and answers are not used here.

Can I use it as a welder practice test for a job?

As general practice, yes. An employer's own test is not copied here. The welder practice questions cover safety rules and basic theory; they do not show how well anyone welds.

Is there a welding practice exam with a pass mark?

No pass mark is set, since no exam is copied. Exam mode draws 25 questions; that length is this site's choice. Print, on the score card, makes a question sheet, and a tick adds an answer key.
