How it works
This welding math practice test is shop arithmetic of our own: inch fractions, millimeters, area, bevel angles, percentages and cutting lengths. Every number needed is in the question, and every answer is worked out step by step.

What is left out
No welding symbol, code value or chart is used, and no school's or employer's test is copied, so no pass mark is implied.
Six topics
The Start from menu under the question sets one: inch fractions, decimals and millimeters, perimeter, area and volume, bevel and miter angles, percentages and ratios, or cutting lengths with kerf. Every plate, pipe, price and cut list is made up.
Print and exam mode
Print, on the score card, makes a question sheet, and a tick adds an answer key. Exam mode draws 25 questions; that length is this site's choice.
- Give inch fractions a common denominator before you add or subtract them.
- Count the cuts as well as the pieces: each cut takes its own kerf out of the stock.
- The Missed pile, under More options, keeps what you got wrong. Clear my progress, under More options, erases what this browser keeps.
Questions and answers
What math is on a welding math test?
Whoever sets it decides: a school, an employer or a training program writes its own. This page copies none of them. It drills six kinds of shop arithmetic, from adding inch fractions to finding the length a cut list takes.
How do you add fractions of an inch?
Give them the same denominator, add the top numbers, then reduce. For example, 3/8 + 1/4 becomes 3/8 + 2/8, which is 5/8 inch. Each fraction question here shows that working.
What is kerf in a cutting length question?
Kerf is the groove a cut leaves, so its width is metal that ends up in no piece. Each question here states the kerf: four 10 inch pieces freed by four 1/8 inch cuts use 40 1/2 inches.
How do you turn inches into millimeters?
Multiply by 25.4, the number of millimeters in one inch. A plate 1/4 inch thick is 0.25 x 25.4 = 6.35 millimeters. To go back, divide the millimeters by 25.4.
Is this practice test from a real welding exam?
No. It is unofficial practice written for this site. No question comes from a real exam, a test publisher or a prep book. Exam mode's 25 questions are this site's choice, and no pass mark is implied.
