What is in each grade's set

Each set has 20 questions in the four reporting categories of the state's framework for that grade: eight to ten on major content, three or four on supporting content, four on reasoning and three or four on modeling. Grades 3 to 5 are written to be worked without a calculator, as on the real test.

How the real test differs

The real test also has questions where you type a number, pick several answers or write out your reasoning. Here every question has four choices. Each explanation ends with the Colorado evidence outcome the question practices, so a wrong answer points to a skill to review.

  • Reasoning questions ask why a method works or where a worked answer goes wrong. Read every choice before you pick.

Questions and answers

Is this the real CMAS math practice test?

No. It is unofficial practice written for this site. The Colorado Department of Education publishes its own practice resources with released questions; the button under the questions opens them.

What math is on the CMAS test?

Each grade's framework splits 50 to 51 score points four ways: major content (39 to 48 percent, by grade), supporting content (13 to 22 percent), reasoning (20 to 22 percent) and modeling (18 percent).

Can you use a calculator on CMAS math?

Not in grades 3 to 5. Grades 6 and 7 may use a five-function calculator and grade 8 a scientific one, on calculator sections only. Graphing calculators are not allowed.

How is CMAS math scored?

Scale scores run from 650 to 850 in five performance levels. Met Expectations starts at 750 in every grade, and the state counts Met and Exceeded Expectations as on track for college and career.
