How it works
This basic math test is unofficial practice in arithmetic: 150 questions of our own, from adding whole numbers to percents and unit conversions. It follows no exam, so no pass mark is implied.

Six topics, 25 questions each
Whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percent, ratio and proportion, and measurement. The questions start easy and get harder, and about one in six is a word problem. Pick one topic for a basic math quiz on a single skill, or leave them mixed for basic math practice across all six.
What counts as basic here
The skills follow the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, read October 9, 2026: place value, fractions and measurement from grades 3 to 5, then ratios, percent and decimals from grades 6 and 7. There is no algebra and no geometry beyond a rectangle. Each conversion question prints its factor, checked in NIST Handbook 44.
- No calculator is needed. Do the working on paper, then look for your answer among the choices.
- For fractions with different bottom numbers, rename both before you add or subtract.
- To find 15% of a number, find 10%, halve that for 5%, and add the two.
Questions and answers
What is on a basic math test?
It depends on who gives it: a school, a job or a training course each sets its own. A basic math exam mostly covers what this practice does: the four operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and simple measurement.
Is this a basic math skills test for a job or a class?
It is practice for either, tied to no employer or school. A 20-question round scores each topic, so the result shows which skill to review. The 20 is our number, not any test's.
Can I print a basic math practice test?
Yes. After a round, the questions print as a paper test with an answer sheet, and one tick adds the key. Save as PDF in the print window gives a basic mathematics test pdf or, with the key, a basic mathematics questions and answers pdf.
Are the answers explained?
Yes. These are basic math questions and answers with the working shown: every answer comes with its steps, on screen and in the printed key.
Is this an official math placement test?
No. Every question was written for this site, and none is copied or reworded from a school test, a placement test, a hiring test or a workbook. A score here does not predict a result on any of them.
