What the real test asks
The framework of April 2016 plans 50 selected-response items, 25 on interpretive listening and 25 on interpretive reading, for 40% of the score. Three constructed responses carry 20% each: an essay in French, a spoken response in French and a response on teaching.
Listening without sound
The real listening items are heard. Here each spoken message (a voicemail, a museum announcement, a radio interview) is a script in French with its question beneath. Reading it only once comes closest to listening.
Timing and the three assignments
Exam mode gives 68 minutes for the 40 questions, the pace of 50 in 85. Five prompts of our own for the writing, speaking and teaching assignments print from under the questions.
Questions and answers
Is this NYSTCE CST practice test for French free?
Yes. All 40 questions, their explanations and the prompts to print are free, with no account to open.
What score passes the NYS CST in French?
The test's page gives 520, a scaled score that also counts the three constructed responses. A number right on these 40 questions cannot be turned into it, so exam mode gives no verdict.
Are the questions in French or in English?
In French, explanations included, since both competencies test the understanding of French. The framework sets the level at Advanced Low or higher on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines of 2012.
Does this practice test cover the speaking and writing parts?
Not as marked items, because the page cannot score speech or essays. It gives prompts to print: two for presentational writing, two for presentational speaking and one for pedagogical content knowledge.
