How this list was compiled: Our own questions, written to the test objectives of MTEL French, field 26, as the test information guide prints them on the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure website (https://www.mtel.nesinc.com/Content/StudyGuide/MA_SG_OBJ_26.htm and https://www.mtel.nesinc.com/TestView.aspx?f=HTML_FRAG/MA026_TestPage.html, read 2026-10-12): 100 multiple-choice questions and 2 open-response items, one of which requires an oral response, in 4 hours; four multiple-choice subareas (Listening Comprehension, objectives 0001 to 0003, 25 to 27 items, 18% of the score; Reading Comprehension, 0004 to 0006, 26 to 28 items, 19%; Linguistics and Language Structures, 0007 to 0009, 25 to 27 items, 18%; Cultural Perspectives, Comparisons, and Connections, 0010 to 0012, 20 to 22 items, 15%) and two open-response subareas, Written Expression and Oral Expression, 15% each. This bank holds 10, 11, 10 and 9 questions for the four multiple-choice subareas. The 21 messages and texts of the first two subareas are our own, the places and people in them are invented, and each answer is read in the text itself; the real listening items are played as sound, and here the script is printed. Every fact in the other two subareas was read on 2026-10-12 in the Wikipedia article named under its question. Licence: Questions, choices, French texts and explanations are original work of this site.

Four subareas, by weight
By the test objectives, listening comprehension brings 18% of the score, reading comprehension 19%, linguistics and language structures 18% and cultural perspectives 15%. The bank holds 10, 11, 10 and 9 questions.
French to read, in place of sound
On the real test the listening items come through a headset. Here each one is printed as a short script: a voicemail, an airport announcement, a radio debate. Reading questions use a brochure, a letter, a review.
Which language each part uses
Comprehension and culture questions are in French, with French explanations. Grammar questions are asked in French and explained in English. Questions on language learning and on French beside English are in English.
Read each script aloud once: the real item is heard, not seen, and only once or twice.
The written and the spoken open-response items are not practiced here.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the MTEL French test?
100 multiple-choice questions and 2 open-response assignments, one of which requires an oral response, in 4 hours of testing time. The objectives give the four multiple-choice subareas 25 to 27, 26 to 28, 25 to 27 and 20 to 22 items.
What is the passing score for MTEL French?
The MTEL site gives a qualifying score of 240. Multiple-choice questions are 70% of the score and the written and oral expression items 15% each, so the number right here carries no verdict.
Is there an MTEL French study guide?
The official materials are on the MTEL site: the test information guide for field 26, with the test objectives, sample questions for each subarea, a practice test and the scoring rubrics. The 40 questions here are separate and name their objective.
Is the MTEL French test given all year?
No. The MTEL site offers French by appointment during testing windows, at specific test centers in Massachusetts.
