How this list was compiled: Our own questions on the law the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners' jurisprudence examination covers. The Board's dental license page (https://www.ncdentalboard.org/dental.htm, opened 2026-10-16) says applicants by examination, by credentials and for a provisional license must pass written examinations, offered on-line in two subject areas: infection control/sterilization and North Carolina jurisprudence. 21 NCAC 16B .0303(a) and 16C .0303(a) set the passing score for dentists and dental hygienists at 80 percent or more. The Board publishes no question count, time limit or content outline, so the five topics here are this site's own sorting. Every fact was read on 2026-10-16 in G.S. Chapter 90, Article 2 (Dentistry) and Article 16 (Dental Hygiene Act) on the General Assembly's site (https://www.ncleg.gov/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/HTML/ByArticle/Chapter_90/Article_2.html and https://www.ncleg.gov/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/HTML/ByArticle/Chapter_90/Article_16.html) and in 21 NCAC 16, the Office of Administrative Hearings' copy of the chapter, which the Board's Rules and Laws page links (https://www.ncdentalboard.org/rules.htm). Each question names its section; statute questions link to the section and rule questions to the Board's Rules and Laws page. Licence: Questions, choices and explanations are original work of this site, written from the public text of the North Carolina General Statutes and the North Carolina Administrative Code. Nothing is taken from the Board's examinations, a prep company or a review book.

  • Dentists owe 15 clock-hours of continuing education each calendar year, hygienists six (21 NCAC 16R .0201, 16I .0201).
  • Treatment records are kept 10 years from the last treatment date; work orders, two (21 NCAC 16T .0101).

Questions and answers

What is the passing score on the North Carolina dental jurisprudence exam?

At least 80 percent. 21 NCAC 16B .0303 sets that score for dentists on the Board's sterilization and jurisprudence examinations, and 21 NCAC 16C .0303 sets the same for dental hygienists.

Is the North Carolina dental jurisprudence exam online?

Yes. The Board's dental license page says its written examinations are offered on-line in two subject areas: infection control and sterilization, and North Carolina jurisprudence.

How many times can you retake the North Carolina jurisprudence exam?

Two additional times in the 12 months after the first attempt, waiting at least 72 hours each time. After three failures, 21 NCAC 16B .0317 requires a Board approved course of study first.

How many questions are on the North Carolina dental jurisprudence exam?

The Board's pages and rules give no question count or time limit, so this page does not guess them. A mock run here asks 25 questions and applies the Board's 80 percent mark, with no clock.

Is this the Board's exam?

No. The questions were written for this site from the public statutes and rules, never from the examination. The North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners has not reviewed this page.
