How this list was compiled: Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:3101 to 37:3143 (Auctioneers Licensing Law), read on October 14, 2026 one section at a time on the Louisiana Legislature's site (https://legis.la.gov/Legis/Law.aspx?d=93919 and the sections after it); and Louisiana Administrative Code Title 46, Part III (Auctioneers), in the Louisiana Auctioneers Licensing Board's copy dated January 1, 2026 (https://www.lalb.org/pdfs/46v03.pdf), read the same day. What the examination covers is from R.S. 37:3114, LAC 46:III.1109 and the board's Requirements for Louisiana Auctioneer Licensing sheet (https://www.lalb.org/pdfs/AuctioneerInfo.pdf). Each law question names its section and links to it; each math question is arithmetic on the numbers it gives. Licence: Own work. Every question, wrong choice and explanation was written for this site from the text of the law, and the math questions use made-up figures. Nothing comes from the state examination, a testing service, a prep course or an exam question pool.

What the Louisiana auctioneer exam covers

R.S. 37:3114 says the written examination shall include questions on Louisiana auction law and sound business practices. The board's licensing sheet adds that the test covers auction school knowledge and the board's statutes and regulations.

What is left out

Auction school subjects, such as bid calling, are not asked.

Where the answers come from

R.S. 37:3101 to 37:3143, read on the Legislature's site, and Title 46, Part III of the Louisiana Administrative Code in the board's copy dated January 1, 2026, both read on October 14, 2026.

  • Pay the consignor within 30 days of receiving the funds or 60 days of the sale, whichever is less (R.S. 37:3125).
  • Announce each article's inventory number before offering it and again, with the price, after it sells (R.S. 37:3133).
  • Commissions on court-ordered sales are capped: 7 percent on immovables and 10 percent on movables (R.S. 37:3124).

Questions and answers

What score do you need to pass the Louisiana auctioneer exam?

70 percent, under LAC 46:III.1109. The board does not publish a question count or time limit, so the 40-question exam round here is our own length. After two successive failures an applicant waits one year.

How do you get an auctioneer license in Louisiana?

Be at least 18, of good moral character, and a United States citizen or legal resident of Louisiana. Finish an approved auction school or a one-year apprenticeship, post a $10,000 bond or cash deposit, and pass the board's written examination (R.S. 37:3113, 37:3118).

Do you need a license to hold an auction in Louisiana?

Yes, unless R.S. 37:3104 excludes the sale. Examples are a sale by sealed bid, a charitable organization's sale, and a person's sale of his own property when not in the business. Online auctions count as auctions.

When do Louisiana auctioneer licenses expire?

On December 31 of each year. Renewal applications are due by November 1, and one submitted after January 1 carries a $75 late penalty (R.S. 37:3115).
