How this list was compiled: Kentucky Revised Statutes Chapter 330 (the Auctioneers License Law of 1962), KRS 330.010 to 330.990, and KRS 355.2-328 (sale by auction), read on October 15, 2026 on the Legislative Research Commission's statute pages (https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/chapter.aspx?id=38868); and 831 KAR 1:010, 1:020 and 1:030, the Board of Auctioneers' administrative regulations, read the same day (https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/kar/titles/831/001/). The examination's sections, question counts, time and pass marks are from the Kentucky Board of Auctioneers' Examination Study Guide, updated March 30, 2026 (https://auctioneers.ky.gov/Documents/Exam%20Study%20Guide%20KBA%20-%20Updated%20March%2030%202026.pdf). Each law question names its section or regulation and links to it; each math question is arithmetic on the numbers it gives. Licence: Own work. Every question, wrong choice and explanation was written for this site from the text of the statutes and regulations, and the math questions use made-up figures. Nothing comes from the state examination, the sample questions in the board's study guide, a testing service, a prep course or an exam question pool.

What the Kentucky auctioneer exam asks

The board's Examination Study Guide, updated March 30, 2026, splits the auctioneer exam into 100 questions on law and general subjects, 10 on mathematics, 20 on an auction listing contract form, 20 on a closing statement and 10 on opening and closing remarks.

What is left out

The contract form, closing statement and remarks questions are set on papers printed in the exam, and sales tax and terminology rest on the study guide, not on a statute. They are not asked. Settlement arithmetic is.

Where the answers come from

KRS 330.010 to 330.990, KRS 355.2-328 and 831 KAR 1:010 to 1:030, read on the Legislative Research Commission's pages on October 15, 2026.

  • A binding written listing contract comes before any advertising or offering of the property (KRS 330.110(1)(l)).
  • An auction is presumed to be with reserve unless the property is offered absolute in explicit terms (KRS 330.220(5)).
  • Proceeds not paid on auction day go into escrow within three banking days (831 KAR 1:020, Section 1).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Kentucky auctioneer exam?

160 for the auctioneer license, in three hours, by the Kentucky Board of Auctioneers' study guide. They carry 100 points and 75 points pass. The apprentice exam is 150 questions with the same 75-point mark.

How do you get an auctioneer license in Kentucky?

Be 18 with a high school diploma or equivalent, hold a Kentucky apprentice license for one year, take part in at least 10 auctions, complete 80 hours of approved instruction and pass the examination (KRS 330.060, 330.070).

Do you need a license to be an auctioneer in Kentucky?

Yes. Advertising or acting as an auctioneer or apprentice without a board license is unlawful. Exceptions include an individual selling property he or she owns and did not buy for resale, and unpaid charity auctions of donated goods (KRS 330.030, 330.040).

When does a Kentucky auctioneer license expire?

On June 30 of each even-numbered year. A license renewed within six months after that date pays a late fee, and after six months the written examination is required again (KRS 330.060, 330.070).
