How this list was compiled: Written from the Illinois Notary Public Act, 5 ILCS 312, as published by the Illinois General Assembly at https://www.ilga.gov/Legislation/ILCS/Articles?ActID=107&ChapterID=2, read 2026-10-03 (the text in force that day, with the fee waiver of Public Act 104-621 and before the change to Section 2-102 that takes effect January 1, 2027). Each question links to its section page in the form https://www.ilga.gov/Documents/legislation/ilcs/documents/000503120K2-101.htm. Eleven questions rest on the Secretary of State's rules in 14 Illinois Administrative Code Part 176 (Sections 176.205, 176.225, 176.900, 176.910 and 176.940), read the same day on the General Assembly's site, https://www.ilga.gov/agencies/JCAR/Sections?PartID=01400176&TitleDescription=TITLE%2014:%20COMMERCE. The size and pass mark of a course provider's final examination (50 questions from a bank of at least 100, at least 85% to pass) are from 14 Ill. Adm. Code 176.235(c), https://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/admincode/014/014001760C02350R.html, read 2026-10-04; no question rests on that section. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute and rule text; nothing is copied from another practice test or from a course provider. Short quotations from the statute are marked.

Course first, then the examination
Section 2-101.5 has first-time and renewing applicants complete a course of study and pass an examination at its end. The rules set 3 hours of instruction and give two years from the exam date to apply. Attorneys, judges and their employees may skip both at renewal.
Two video routes, two sets of rules
A remote act keeps the paper and the rubber stamp, and the signer attests to being in Illinois. An electronic act needs a separate electronic commission and a recording kept 7 years. The Start from menu has both under Remote and electronic acts.
A $5,000 bond for four years; $25,000 more for audio-video acts, or one $30,000 bond for both (section 2-105).
Residents get a 4-year term. A border-state resident who works in Illinois gets one year (section 2-101).
The rubber stamp reads "Official Seal", your name, "Notary Public", "State of Illinois" and the expiration date, in black ink.
Questions and answers
Is there an Illinois notary exam?
Yes. Since January 1, 2024, applicants complete a course and pass its final examination (section 2-101.5, rule 176.205). Rule 176.235 sets 50 questions from a bank of at least 100, and 85% to pass. A pass here measures this bank, not a provider's examination.
Are these the questions on the real Illinois exam?
No. The site has not seen any course provider's examination and has no tie to the Illinois Secretary of State. The bank was written from the Act and the rules. No commissioned Illinois notary has reviewed the answers yet.
How much can an Illinois notary charge?
No more than $5 for a non-electronic notarial act and up to $25 for an electronic one, under section 3-104. Receipts must be itemized, with the notarial fee shown apart from any other charge.
Does an Illinois notary have to keep a journal?
Yes. Section 3-107 requires a journal of each notarial act, on paper or in electronic form. It exempts candidates' nominating papers, and rule 176.900 exempts a notary whose law-firm employer keeps copies of the documents.
