How it works

Where Illinois and federal rules differ

Most wrong choices here are the federal rule. Illinois overrides a veto with three-fifths of the members elected, where Congress needs two thirds. A bill is read by title on three days, an amendment in full. A Governor must be 25 and a legislator 21.

A round of 25

Exam mode draws 25 from all 210, so expect about 19 on the Illinois Constitution and two or so each on the US Constitution, the Declaration and the flag. Some rounds miss one of those three. Choose a part under Start from first and the round keeps to it. New here? Start with the Bill of Rights (Article I), then the three branches (Articles IV to VI).

  • Count votes by the members elected, not the members present. Illinois uses that base for passing bills, overriding vetoes and impeachment.
  • Learn the three-fifths list: veto overrides, proposed amendments, judicial retention, State debt and moving a county seat.

Questions and answers

Is the constitution test required in Illinois?

Yes, in public schools. 105 ILCS 5/27-510 says no student may receive a certificate of graduation without passing a satisfactory examination on these subjects. The Illinois Community College Board asks the same of high school equivalency candidates and offers a free online module.

What is on the Illinois state constitution test?

The statute names four subjects: the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, the Illinois Constitution, and the proper use and display of the American flag. Each school writes its own examination, so ask yours what it covers.

Does this cover the Illinois US Constitution test too?

In part. Twenty questions here sample the federal text, and a mixed round holds two or three of them. For a full federal round, the US Constitution practice test on this site draws 50 questions written only from the articles and amendments.

Will my school's test use these exact questions?

No. Nobody here has seen a school's examination, and no teacher has reviewed these answers yet. Every question was written from the public text and shows its article and section. If an answer disagrees with the section, the section wins.
