How this list was compiled: Every question rests on one section of the Hawaii Administrative Rules, Title 19, named in the question's own source line: chapter 19-133.2 (Periodic Inspection of Vehicles, compiled August 30, 2026) or chapter 19-133.5 (fine, suspension or revocation of an inspection station permit or inspector's certification, 2021). Both were read on 2026-10-12 in the copies the Hawaii Department of Transportation publishes: https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/home/doing-business/hawaii-administrative-rules/ . Licence: Own work. Every question, every wrong choice and every explanation was written for this site from the text of the section it cites. The rules are public law of the State of Hawaii. Nothing is taken from the State's or a county's inspector examination, a training handout or another practice test.
How it works
Safety inspector Hawaii practice test for people who will run vehicle safety inspections: questions written from the state's inspection rule, Hawaii Administrative Rules chapter 19-133.2. It is unofficial.
Read the full guide
The written test and its 80 per cent mark
Section 19-133.2-12 sets a written and a performance examination. A failed test waits seven days, with three tries a year at most. The rule prints no question count or time limit, so exam mode's 25 questions are this site's choice.
A study guide in the rule's order
As a Hawaii state inspection study guide, the eleven topics follow the chapter: inspector certificates, station permits, which vehicles and when, fees and stickers, then steering and tires, brakes, lamps, glass, body, motorcycles and trailers, and infractions.
Where each answer comes from
Every explanation names its section of chapter 19-133.2, compiled August 30, 2026, or of chapter 19-133.5 on fines and suspensions. Both were read on October 12, 2026 in the copies the Hawaii Department of Transportation publishes.
Figures decide many answers: 2/32 inch of tread, 1/32 on a motorcycle, headlamps 22 to 54 inches high, thirty days to fix a failure.
An inspector certificate is valid only in the county where it was issued.
Motorcycles are listed separately on the certificate and carry their own written and performance examination.
Questions and answers
Is this the real Hawaii safety inspector test?
No. It is unofficial practice written from the published rule, not from the examination. The Hawaii Department of Transportation and the county agencies that run the program did not write or review it.
What score passes the Hawaii vehicle inspector test?
Eighty per cent on the written and on the performance examination, under section 19-133.2-12. Fail either one and the process starts again with the written test.
Who can become a safety inspector in Hawaii?
Section 19-133.2-12 asks for age eighteen, a valid Hawaii driver license for the vehicle type, and either one year of automotive schooling or two years of work in maintenance, repair or inspection, before the examinations.
How long does a Hawaii safety inspector certificate last?
Four years from the date of issue under section 19-133.2-13. Renewal is applied for within the sixty days before it expires and follows the certification procedure again. No reminder notice is sent.
Is there a Hawaii vehicle safety inspection study guide?
The study text is the rule itself: every station must keep a paper copy of chapter 19-133.2. The Department of Transportation publishes it, and its Motor Vehicle Safety Office library lists a PMVI manual for inspectors of motorcycles.
