What the exam covers
NHA's Test Plan for the ExCPT Exam, based on a job analysis completed in 2023 and read October 8, 2026, counts 100 scored items in five domains: role, responsibilities and general duties 15; laws 15; drugs and drug therapy 13; dispensing process 43; medication safety and quality assurance 14.
How the bank is split
The 80 questions follow those counts: 12, 12, 10, 34 and 12, with six calculations inside dispensing. Exam mode asks 60 in 65 minutes, the pace of 120 items in 2 hours 10 minutes.
Where the facts come from
Each answer names the public text it was read in: FDA pages, the Code of Federal Regulations, the DEA Pharmacist's Manual, MedlinePlus drug information and Medicare.gov. State pharmacy rules differ, so only federal sources are asked.
- For technician duties, ratios and refill rules in your state, read your own board of pharmacy's regulations.
Questions and answers
Is an NHA CPhT practice test the same as an ExCPT pharmacy technician practice test?
Yes. ExCPT is the name of the exam, and CPhT is the credential NHA gives for passing it, by NHA's certification page. The ExCPT exam questions here are written to NHA's test plan, and none is taken from the real exam.
How many questions are on the ExCPT exam?
120: 100 scored items and 20 pretest items, with an exam time of 2 hours and 10 minutes, by NHA's test plan. Pretest items do not affect the score, by its candidate handbook.
What is a passing score on the ExCPT?
NHA reports a scaled score from 200 to 500, and 390 or higher passes, by its candidate handbook. It prints no percent, so a result here is the number right, not a forecast.
Is there a free NHA pharmacy technician study guide?
NHA's own free study aid is the ExCPT test plan, which maps the topics; its study guide and practice tests are sold separately and are not required. This page's questions sort by the plan's domains and print as a paper test.
Who can take the ExCPT exam?
A candidate needs a high school diploma or equivalent, plus a pharmacy technician training program finished within the last 5 years or 1 year of work experience that includes 1,200 or more hours of supervised pharmacy-related work in the last 3 years, by NHA's certification page.
