How this list was compiled: Our own questions. Part A follows the grade 5 to grade 8 standards of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics; Part B takes lines and systems from the grade 8 standards and polynomials, quadratics and functions from the high school Algebra and Functions standards (https://www.thecorestandards.org/Math/, read 2026-10-09). Each question names the standard it practices and links to that standard's page. Every answer is arithmetic or algebra on what the question prints, worked out a second time on 2026-10-09. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices, explanations and the two grid pictures were written and drawn for this site. Nothing is copied or reworded from a school, district or publisher pretest, a placement test or a state test.

How it works

This free Algebra 1 pretest is one fixed paper of 40 questions of our own, so a whole class sits the same test. It is unofficial and not the placement test of any school or district; a school decides placement.

Read the full guide

Two parts

Part A has 27 questions on what a student brings to the course. Part B has 13 that preview Algebra 1. The order never changes, Part A first.

Reading the result

The Scored pretest marks all 40 at the end and scores each part and skill. A low Part A score names earlier skills to review. Part B shows a starting point for the course itself.

Where the questions come from

Part A follows the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, grades 5 to 8, read October 9, 2026. Part B takes lines and systems from grade 8 and the rest from high school.

  • No calculator is needed: every number was chosen to work out by hand.
  • The same paper given again at the end of the course shows what changed.

Questions and answers

What is on an Algebra 1 pretest?

Each school writes its own. Part A of this one checks grade 5 to 8 skills: integers and order of operations, fractions, percents and proportions, exponents and roots, expressions, simple equations and plotted points. Part B previews slope, lines, systems, polynomials and quadratics.

Is this an Algebra 1 placement test?

No. It is Algebra 1 placement test practice only. A high school algebra placement test is written and scored by the school or district, which also decides placement. The school's counselor or math department can say what its test covers.

Is this Algebra 1 pre-test printable with an answer key?

Yes. Print the pretest lists all 40 questions in order; tick the answer key to add it, then print. Choose Save as PDF in the print window to keep a copy.

How many questions should a student get right?

This page sets no pass mark, and a school sets its own cut-off where it uses one. The score by part says more than the total.
