What the Virginia exam covers

The content outline has seven parts: legal and ethical issues (7 of 80 questions), preparing for safe administration (11), the basics of medication administration (18), instillations and treatments (18), storage and disposal (6), special issues (11) and insulin administration (9). This bank keeps those proportions in 60 questions.

Where the answers come from

The Board's 2022 curriculum answers 24 questions. Virginia's regulations, 22VAC40-73 and 18VAC90-60, answer 21, the Code of Virginia 1, and MedlinePlus the 14 on eye, ear, nasal and other routes and on diabetes.

Where Virginia differs

A registered medication aide works in assisted living and may not take drugs from the stat-drug box, send a verbal order to a pharmacy or use a feeding tube. The only injections are insulin, glucagon and auto-injectable epinephrine.

  • Dosing window: one hour before to one hour after the facility's schedule, unless the drug is ordered for a specific time.
