What the South Carolina barber written exam is

The Board's examination page asks registered barber applicants to pass the NIC theory and practical exams. The candidate bulletin (SC CIB 2026.10.16, opened October 16, 2026) lists two written tests, Barber 1 (No Chemical) and Barber Styling.

What this page practices

Neither outline lists state law, so this bank does not follow them. It asks South Carolina's own text: the sanitary rules of Regulation 17-50, barbershops and mobile barbershops, training and licenses, hair braiding, and the Board.

  • Instruments that touch a patron are immersed in at least 60 percent alcohol or an EPA registered disinfectant before each use (Regulation 17-50).
  • Only a master haircare specialist may use chemicals to wave, relax, straighten or bleach hair in a barbershop (Section 40-7-260).
  • Inspection grades: A is 90 to 100, B 80 to 89, C 70 to 79. A low grade gets thirty days to comply (Regulation 17-50).

The Board's examination page gives 70 percent for the NIC theory and practical exams, and the bulletin lists a passing score of 70 for each. Proof of passing both portions is required.

Are these the real South Carolina barber exam questions?

No. Each was written for this page from Title 40, Chapter 7 of the Code of Laws and Chapter 17 of the Code of Regulations, with the section under each answer. Nothing comes from the examination or a textbook.

The Board's examination page gives 1,500 hours in an approved barber college or school, or 1,920 hours of on-the-job training under a licensed barber instructor in a licensed barbershop.
