What the questions cover
The Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission's State Certification Exam closes Peace Officer Basic Training. The commission's audit sheet for curriculum BAS-045, effective July 1, 2026, lists 13 units and 740 hours. These OPOTA law enforcement practice tests take its statute topics: legal basics, crimes against persons, property and justice, other offenses, arrest, domestic violence, juveniles and motor vehicle offenses. Which chapter sits under which topic is our own sorting.
What is left out
Court decisions, the weapons chapter, crash investigation and the skill units: firearms, driving, subject control and first aid. No question comes from the commission's lesson plans or its exam.
- Aggravated menacing turns on serious physical harm, menacing on physical harm (sections 2903.21 and 2903.22).
- Riot needs four or more others: five people with the offender (section 2917.03).
- A minor misdemeanor brings a citation, not an arrest, unless one of four exceptions applies (section 2935.26).
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the OPOTA state exam?
200 multiple-choice questions in two and a half hours for Peace Officer Basic, with 70% to pass. The commission's Candidate Handbook, dated April 2021 and still linked from its forms page on October 16, 2026, gives those figures.
What happens if you fail the OPOTA state test?
You get one retest inside your testing window. Ohio Administrative Code rule 109:2-1-11 says a student who fails the retest may not take the exam again until completing another peace officer basic training course.
Is there a study guide for the OPOTA test?
The Candidate Handbook prints the format and no content outline, and course material comes from your academy. Here every explanation names its Revised Code section, so the bank can be read as a study guide for the law topics.
Is there an OPOTA defensive tactics practice test here?
No. Subject Control Techniques is a 70-hour mandatory skill on the audit sheet, with its own proficiency testing record. This page asks only the law around force: deadly force, self-defense, resisting arrest and assault on a peace officer.
Is this Ohio OPOTA practice test official?
No. It is unofficial practice written from Ohio statutes read October 16, 2026. The Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission and the Ohio Attorney General's office did not write or review it, and no question comes from the state exam. It is not legal advice.
