What the real test asks

Five competencies, 18 selected-response items each: that is the whole multiple-choice part in the framework of May 2018, and it counts for 80%. A written response on teaching a health education topic supplies the last 20%.

What this page covers

Twenty-nine of the 45 questions rest on New York's own law and standards: sections 804 and 903 of the Education Law, the Dignity for All Students Act, section 135.3 of the Commissioner's Regulations and the State's guidance document for health education. Timed, the 45 take 68 minutes, half the real 135 rounded up.

  • Section 135.3 is the regulation to know: it sets who teaches health in each grade band, the half-year courses and the rules for AIDS instruction.

Questions and answers

What is tested on the NYSTCE Health Education CST?

Health promotion, risk reduction, personal and social health skills, health literacy skills and health education program planning, in equal shares of the selected-response items. The sixth competency, pedagogical content knowledge, is the written response.

Is 520 the passing score for the Health Education CST?

Yes. The Health Education (073) page gives 520 as the passing score. It is scaled, so a tally of right answers on this page cannot be read as a pass or a fail.

When is the NYSTCE Health Education test given?

By appointment year-round, Monday through Saturday, excluding some holidays, the test's page says. Plan on 3 hours 30 minutes at the test center, the first 15 of them for a tutorial and a nondisclosure agreement.

Does this page copy the real Health Education test?

It does not. The 45 questions are original to this site and follow the framework's performance indicators. Real test items, the study guide's sample questions and paid practice tests were left unopened.
