Six competencies, in proportion

The framework of May 2018 plans 90 selected-response questions: 18 on fundamentals of technology and engineering education, 18 on design, 16 on manufacturing, construction and materials, 13 on information and communication, 15 on transportation and energy and 10 on biotechnology and environmental quality. This bank holds 9, 9, 8, 7, 8 and 5.

New York in the bank

Fifteen questions come from Standard 5 of the state's Mathematics, Science, and Technology learning standards, which the framework names: open and closed loops, the systems diagram, annealing, tradeoffs. Four more rest on the State Education Department's own pages on the subject.

Pace

The framework allows up to 135 minutes for its 90 questions; a timed run here asks 46 in 69 minutes, a minute and a half each.

  • Seven answers take arithmetic: board feet, a drawing scale, a sampling rate, Ohm's law, a transformer, a lever and a hydraulic jack.

Questions and answers

What is on the NYSTCE Technology Education test?

Ninety selected-response questions on six competencies and one written response on pedagogical content knowledge, by the framework of May 2018. The selected-response questions count for 80% of the score and the written response, designed for up to 60 minutes, for 20%.

What is a passing score on the Technology Education CST?

The Technology Education (118) page gives 520. That figure is a scaled score and not a number of questions, so this page reports how many you got right and draws no pass line.

When can you take the Technology Education CST?

Not on any day of the year. The test's own page says it is given by appointment during testing windows, and it links the list of windows.

Is Technology Education the same test as Educational Technology Specialist?

No. Technology Education (118) covers engineering design, materials, manufacturing, communication, transportation, energy and biotechnology. Educational Technology Specialist (071) is a separate test on the NYSTCE list, with its own practice test.
