Reading Comprehension 18
A coral owes its color, and most of its food, to tiny algae that live in its tissues. When the water grows too warm, a stressed coral expels its algae and turns white, an event called bleaching. A bleached coral is not dead. If the stress passes soon, it can recover; if not, the coral, without its main food and prone to disease, eventually dies. Heat is the leading cause but not the only one: in January 2010 cold water bleached corals in the Florida Keys. Bleaching is less a single illness than a common symptom of a reef under stress. What does "expels" most nearly mean in the passage? What to Expect on the ISEE, Upper Level (ERB, 2021), page 41: Reading Comprehension, vocabulary. "expel" read in Wiktionary

In 1872 Congress made Yellowstone the first federally protected national park. To most Easterners the West had been a place to cross on the way to the Pacific, or a mystery. Then surveys, photographs and paintings made its scenery famous. That popularity, paradoxically, endangered the wilderness, since settlement followed wherever land was opened. Some propose that students stop memorizing, since any fact can be looked up in seconds. The argument mistakes what memory is for. A fact stored outside the mind can be retrieved; it cannot be used to notice anything. A reader who knows a few poems by heart hears their echoes in a new one. Looking things up answers questions we already know to ask. Remembering supplies the questions. None of this means drilling students like parrots on lists they do not understand. A well-stocked memory is not the enemy of thinking but its raw material. What the Upper Level adds
Its sections and timing match the Middle Level. The words are harder, some sentence completions take a pair of words, and the mathematics reaches second-year algebra. The owner's guide puts real passages at 300 to 600 words; the three here are far shorter.
A printable test or a PDF
To keep this ISEE Upper Level practice test as a PDF, print the question sheet and pick "Save as PDF" in the print window. The answer key is optional.
Our own questions
All 80 follow the guide's description of each section, and none is copied or reworded from an ISEE, the guide's samples or its practice test. Mathematics answers were recomputed. Word meanings were checked in Wiktionary, and two passages restate NOAA and the National Archives.
Questions and answers
What grades take the ISEE Upper Level?
Students applying to grades 9 through 12. The owner calls the Upper Level a high school entrance exam, and the level follows the grade applied to, so an eighth grader applying to grade 9 takes it.
What math is on the ISEE Upper Level?
The guide lists number sense, algebraic concepts, geometry, measurement, and data analysis and probability. Algebraic concepts is the largest area, 13 to 17 of the 47 Mathematics Achievement questions, and calculators are not allowed without an approved accommodation.

Yes. The exam's owner gives away What to Expect on the ISEE, Upper Level, a PDF guide with a paper practice test, and has a free online sample test. The questions on this page are separate from both.
How many times can you take the ISEE?
Once in each testing season: fall (August to November), winter (December to March) and spring/summer (April to July). That allows up to three tries in one school year.
How many questions are on the ISEE Upper Level?
160 multiple-choice questions: 40 Verbal Reasoning, 37 Quantitative Reasoning, 36 Reading Comprehension and 47 Mathematics Achievement, followed by one essay prompt. The guide says a few questions in each section are unscored tryouts for future tests.
