2 hours 40 minutes, plus two 10-minute breaks, says the owner's 2026-2027 Quick Facts Guide. The online and paper formats have the same number of questions and the same timing.
What grade is the ISEE Middle Level for?
Students applying to grades 7 and 8. The owner sets the level by the grade a student is applying to, not the current grade, so a sixth grader applying to grade 7 takes the Middle Level.
How is the ISEE Middle Level scored?
Only correct answers count, and nothing is taken off for a wrong one. The owner's guide describes a scaled score, a percentile rank and a stanine from 1 to 9 for each section, and says students do not pass or fail.
Can you use a calculator on the ISEE?
No. The Quick Facts Guide lists calculators among the prohibited materials, unless a student has an approved accommodation for one. The mathematics questions here are written to be worked by hand.
