How it works
Arizona's state test for grades 3 to 8, once called AzMERIT, is now AASA, Arizona's Academic Standards Assessment. This unofficial page has a practice set for each grade. Every question is our own. Not affiliated with the Arizona Department of Education.

What is in each grade's set
Ten math questions, shared among the reporting categories in the proportions of that grade's math blueprint. Then eight English language arts questions: three on a short story, three on a short informational text and two on grammar and punctuation. The real test also asks for an essay, which cannot be marked here, and its passages are much longer than these.
How the answers are checked
Each question names the Arizona standard it practices, as numbered in the state's item specifications. Every math answer is worked out again from the numbers in the question. Each reading answer is found in the short text printed with the question.
Questions and answers
Is AzMERIT the same as AASA?
Yes, under a new name. The state's 2025 technical report says AzMERIT was renamed AzM2 beginning in 2019-2020, and AzM2 was renamed AASA beginning in 2021-2022, with the same cut scores.
Where are the official AzMERIT sample tests?
They are now the AASA Sample Tests, on the state's testing portal: select Arizona, then Mic Check and Sample Tests. No username or password is needed. The button in the box under the questions opens the portal.
What grades take the AASA test?
All Arizona public school students in grades 3 to 8, in English language arts and mathematics. The spring 2027 window opens April 12: paper tests end April 23, and computer-based reading and math units end May 7.
How long is the AASA test?
It is untimed. The state estimates 60 to 90 minutes for the writing unit, 45 to 75 for each of the two reading units and 60 to 85 for each of the two math units. A unit must be finished the day it is started.
Can I print an AzMERIT practice test as a PDF?
Yes. After a set, Print opens the questions you answered as a sheet; add the rest of the grade and tick the answer key if you want one. To keep a PDF, choose Save as PDF in the print window.
