The real test: AASA mathematics, grade 8

Who takes it
All Arizona public school students in grade 8, the last grade AASA tests. Grade 8 also takes the state science test, AzSCI.
Items
55 in two units. 47 are scored, one point each: 23 in Unit 1 and 24 in Unit 2. The other 8 are field-test items that do not count.
Blueprint
Functions 21 to 25%, expressions and equations 29 to 33%, geometry 17 to 21%, statistics and probability 4 to 8%, the number system 15 to 19%.
Calculator
A scientific calculator on Math Unit 1 only, built into the online test. None on Math Unit 2.
Time
Untimed. The state estimates 60 to 85 minutes for each math unit, and a unit is finished the day it is started.
Score levels
Minimally Proficient 3566 to 3649, Partially Proficient 3650 to 3672, Proficient 3673 to 3704, Highly Proficient 3705 to 3776.

What 8th grade AASA math covers

Expressions and equations is the largest of the blueprint's five categories, with 12 of the 40 questions: integer exponents, roots, scientific notation, slope, linear equations and inequalities, systems. Functions has 10: inputs and outputs, rate of change and initial value, reading a graph. Geometry has 8: transformations, angles, the Pythagorean Theorem, volume of a cone. The number system has 7, all on rational and irrational numbers. Statistics and probability has 3.

AzMERIT testing practice for 8th grade: with or without a calculator

No question here needs a calculator, so the set can be worked with one or without. The steps are under each answer.

  • The item specifications keep function notation off the grade 8 test. A rule is written as an equation, such as y = 3x + 5.

Questions and answers

Is AzMERIT the same as AASA in 8th grade?

Yes. AASA is the same Arizona test under a newer name: it was AzMERIT until 2019-2020, then AzM2, and AASA since 2021-2022, the state's technical report says. Grade 8 is the last grade that takes it.

How many questions are on the 8th grade AASA math test?

55, in two units: 47 scored items worth one point each and 8 field-test items that do not count. Unit 1 has 27 items and Unit 2 has 28.

Can you use a calculator on the 8th grade AASA math test?

On Math Unit 1 only. Arizona's guidance permits a scientific calculator there in grades 7 and 8, and one is built into the online test. Calculators that solve problems or can be programmed are not allowed.

What score is proficient on 8th grade AASA math?

A scale score of 3673 to 3704 is Proficient, and 3705 to 3776 is Highly Proficient. Below that are Partially Proficient, 3650 to 3672, and Minimally Proficient. A percent on this page is not a scale score.
