What 5th grade CMAS math covers

Colorado's grade 5 framework splits 50 to 51 score points among four reporting categories, and this set has one question for each of 50 points. Major content has 23: place value, decimal arithmetic, and adding, multiplying and dividing fractions. Supporting content has 8: expressions, patterns, unit conversion, line plots, volume and the coordinate plane. Reasoning has 10, which ask why a method works or where worked steps go wrong. Modeling has 9 word problems of three steps or more.

  • Colorado's evidence statements define a trapezoid as a quadrilateral with at least one pair of parallel sides, so every parallelogram counts as one.

Questions and answers

Is this the state's CMAS practice test for 5th grade?

No. It is unofficial practice written for this site, and nothing here is copied from the state. The Colorado Department of Education lists its own CMAS Practice Resources on its CMAS page.

Can 5th graders use a calculator on CMAS math?

No. The state's calculator policy allows none in grades 3 to 5, except as an approved accommodation. Five-function calculators begin in grade 6.

What is a good score on 5th grade CMAS math?

Scale scores run from 650 to 850 in five performance levels. For grade 5 math, Met Expectations is 750 to 789 and Exceeded Expectations is 790 to 850. The state counts both as on track for college and career.

Which CMAS tests do fifth graders take?

Math, English language arts and science. This page is math only. Grade 5 is one of the three grades, with 8 and 11, that take CMAS science.
