How it works
Second graders take the Elementary SCAT. Here are 110 questions of our own at that level: 55 word analogies and 55 number comparisons. Unofficial practice, not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth.

How to use this 2nd grade SCAT practice test
Read the first questions aloud with your child. An analogy asks for the pair of words linked the same way as the first pair. A comparison asks whether A is greater, B is greater or the two are equal.
When your child is ready for the clock
Exam mode gives a whole section: 55 questions in 22 minutes. CTY tells children the test is designed for older students, so they are not expected to know every answer.
What is different here
Our comparisons have three choices, because CTY keeps "not enough information" for older students. Third graders sit the same level. From fourth grade: SCAT Intermediate practice test.
- Turn the first pair into a sentence, such as "a kitten is a young cat", and try it on each choice.
- Look before adding: 25 + 38 must beat 25 + 36, because 38 is more than 36.
Questions and answers
Which SCAT test does a 2nd grader take?
The Elementary SCAT, which CTY gives to students in grades 2 and 3. It has a verbal section of analogies and a quantitative section of comparisons.
How many questions are on the SCAT for 2nd grade?
Each section has 50 scored questions with five unscored experimental ones mixed in, so a child answers 55 in 22 minutes. The two sections are separated by an optional 10-minute break.
Is this a free SCAT practice test for 2nd grade?
Yes, free and with no sign-up. Every question was written for this site from CTY's public description of the test; none comes from the real SCAT. CTY's own Elementary sample questions are linked from its SCAT page.
What SCAT score does a 2nd grader get?
A scaled score for each section: 401 to 471 in verbal and 412 to 475 in quantitative at the Elementary level. CTY tests above grade level, so the result compares your child with older test-takers.
