How this list was compiled: Our own analogies, written to the description of the Verbal Section on the SCAT page of the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (https://cty.jhu.edu/testing/scat, read 2026-10-08): students in grades 4 and 5 take the Intermediate SCAT; the section is 22 minutes long and has 50 questions plus five unscored experimental ones, each a multiple-choice analogy answered by choosing the pair of words that completes the comparison. 55 analogies. The five topics name the kind of link between the words; the grouping is ours, not CTY's. Word meanings and the link in each pair were checked in Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/) on 2026-10-08. Licence: Questions, choices and explanations are original work of this site.

How this list was compiled: Our own comparisons, written to the description of the Quantitative Section on the SCAT page of the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (https://cty.jhu.edu/testing/scat, read 2026-10-08): students in grades 4 and 5 take the Intermediate SCAT; the section is 22 minutes long and has 50 questions plus five unscored experimental ones, each a multiple-choice comparison of two quantities: one is greater, both are equal or, for older students, there is not enough information. 55 comparisons. The page does not say at which level the fourth choice starts; every comparison here carries it and three use it. The five topics are our grouping, not CTY's. Every answer is arithmetic that is worked out again from the two quantities; unit and shape definitions were checked in Wiktionary on 2026-10-08. Licence: Questions, choices and explanations are original work of this site.

How it works

This SCAT Intermediate practice test gives fourth and fifth graders two full sections of our own questions, 55 verbal and 55 quantitative. It is unofficial, not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth.

How to use this SCAT Intermediate practice test

Practice mode marks each answer at once and gives the reason. Then take one section in Exam mode: 55 questions in 22 minutes, CTY's count and time for a real section.

Why some questions feel too hard

CTY tests above grade level, so this level measures a fourth or fifth grader against older students. The bank reaches past grade 5 on purpose: archipelago, opaque, remainders, volume.

The fourth choice

CTY's sample for grades 4 and 5 gives each comparison a fourth choice, "not enough information". Every comparison here carries it and three use it. Other levels: SCAT test practice.

  • A section allows about 24 seconds a question. Answer and move on: a wrong answer costs nothing on the real test.
  • Mind the order of a pair. "Novel is to chapter" is not the same link as "chapter is to novel".
  • When two products or sums share a number, compare what is left and skip the arithmetic.
