How this list was compiled: Our own questions, written to the description of the two sections on the SCAT page of the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (https://cty.jhu.edu/testing/scat, read 2026-10-08): students in grade 6 and above take the Advanced SCAT; the verbal section asks analogies answered by choosing the pair of words that completes the comparison, and the quantitative section asks comparisons of two quantities (one is greater, both are equal or, for older students, there is not enough information). 20 analogies and 20 comparisons, in blocks of five. Word meanings, units and shapes were checked in Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/) on 2026-10-08; every quantity is worked out again. Licence: Questions, choices and explanations are original work of this site.

How it works

Pick a level and try both kinds of SCAT question: verbal analogies and comparisons of two quantities. All 120 questions are our own. Unofficial, and not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth.

What the SCAT exam asks

The School and College Ability Test asks two kinds of question. In the verbal section you pick the pair of words that completes an analogy. In the quantitative section you compare two quantities, often with no arithmetic at all. CTY tests above grade level, so some questions are meant to feel hard.

What is different here

A real section has 55 questions on a computer; a level here has 20 of each kind. As in CTY's samples, Elementary comparisons have three choices and the two higher levels add "not enough information". CTY's own SCAT test sample questions are linked under the questions.

  • Say the link between the first two words as a sentence, then try that sentence on each choice.
  • CTY takes nothing off for a wrong answer, so when unsure, pick the best guess and move on.

Questions and answers

What is the SCAT test?

The School and College Ability Test is a multiple-choice test of verbal and quantitative reasoning, usually taken on a computer. The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth uses it to qualify students in grades 2 to 12 for its programs.

Is there a SCAT sample test PDF or a SCAT practice test PDF?

Yes, as a printed sheet. Finish a round, press Print, tick the answer key and choose Save as PDF in the print window. The SCAT sample here is our own; CTY publishes a separate sample for each level.

How many SCAT test questions are there, and how long is it?

Each section has 50 scored questions and five unscored experimental ones that are not marked, in 22 minutes. An optional 10-minute break separates the two sections, and the test itself mostly takes under an hour.

How is the SCAT scored?

Each section gets a scaled score whose range depends on the level: Elementary verbal runs from 401 to 471, Advanced quantitative from 424 to 514. Results compare a child with older test-takers.

Is there a SCAT test prep app?

None is needed for this page. It runs in the browser of a phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to install.
