  • "The letter from the conservatory had been on the piano for two days, unopened. Mirela dusted around it. She practiced beside it. At dinner her father talked about the price of diesel and did not once look toward the front room, which was how she knew he had seen it too. On the third morning she found the envelope moved an inch to the left, squared neatly against the metronome. She laughed out loud in the empty room, slid a thumb under the flap, and read the first line standing up." The passage ends before the reader learns what the letter says. What is the effect of that choice? Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, standard RL.9-10.5

Informational Text 9

  • "Our district should stop ranking students by class standing. A rank turns classmates into rivals for a single number, and it punishes those who choose a demanding elective over an easy A. Supporters of ranking say colleges expect it. Yet the admissions officers who visited our school last fall told the board that they read the transcript itself, course by course. If the people for whom the rank is supposedly calculated do not need it, we are keeping a contest with no audience." How does the author answer the supporters of ranking? Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, standard RI.9-10.8

The opposite happened: returns rose, because borrowers who had been hiding from old debts came back, books in hand. Circulation among teenagers nearly doubled. What the publisher lists for high school

TerraNova NEXT, the newer edition, stops at grade 8. Grades 9 to 12 take TerraNova3 Complete Battery on paper, at Levels 19 to 21/22, and the publisher gives one line of tests for all four grades: Reading 46 questions, Language 34, Mathematics 46, Science 40 and Social Studies 40. A ninth and a tenth grader face the same five tests.

How the three sets are built

The publisher lists no objectives in public for these levels, so the topics are this page's own choice of tenth grade work: algebra, functions, geometry and probability; a story, a poem, a report and an argument; grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Each question names a Common Core standard, and the mathematics is worked out a second time.

Questions and answers

What is on the Terra Nova test in 10th grade?

Five tests: Reading, Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, all selected response on paper. The publisher's table gives 206 questions and 4 hours 5 minutes for the whole battery in grades 9 to 12.

Is this practice for the Terra Nova 3rd edition at grade 10?

It is written for TerraNova3 Complete Battery, the only TerraNova the publisher lists for grades 9 to 12. That test reports norm-referenced scores on 2024 norms, objective mastery scores and performance levels.

Is the Terra Nova practice test the same for 9th and 10th grade?

The publisher's table has one row for grades 9 to 12, with the same tests, question counts and times, at Levels 19 to 21/22. These questions are pitched at tenth grade; a ninth grader can use them as a stretch.

How long is the 10th grade Terra Nova math test?

The publisher lists 46 mathematics questions in 1 hour 10 minutes for grades 9 to 12. Reading has 46 questions in an hour, and Language has 34 in 35 minutes.
