Subareas and weights

By the test objectives: engineering design, 20% of the score; materials, tools and manufacturing, 16%; technological systems, 22%; energy and power technologies, 22%. This bank holds 12, 10, 14 and 14, and each explanation names its objective.

Calculations

Twelve questions are calculations: scale, unit conversion, force components, Pascal's law, Ohm's law, power, mechanical advantage and gear ratios. Each answer was worked out a second time from the numbers in the question.

What the real test adds

Two open-response assignments carry the other 20%: one on teaching engineering design, one on a technological system or an energy and power technology. They are written analyses and are not practiced here.

  • The MTEL site says a scientific calculator and a sheet of constants and formulas are provided on screen during the real test.
  • The MTEL site sets one 4-hour clock for the whole test, so exam mode here runs without a timer.

Questions and answers

Is there an official MTEL Technology/Engineering practice test?

Yes. The MTEL site lists a Technology/Engineering practice test beside sample questions, a sample open-response assignment and the formulas and constants sheet. This page is separate: its questions are our own, each naming its objective and its source.

Is MTEL Technology/Engineering field 33 or field 70?

The MTEL tests list offers Technology/Engineering as field 70. A test information guide for field 33 is still on the MTEL site, but the list no longer shows that number. These questions were written to the field 70 objectives.

How many questions are on the MTEL Technology/Engineering test?

100 multiple-choice questions and 2 open-response assignments, in 4 hours of testing time at a test center. The MTEL site adds that some questions may not count toward the score.

What is the passing score for the MTEL Technology/Engineering test?

The MTEL site gives a qualifying score of 240. That score also counts the two written assignments, so the number right here carries no verdict.

What is on the MTEL Technology/Engineering test?

Thirteen multiple-choice objectives: mathematics and science in engineering, the design process, technology in society, tools and safety, manufacturing, communication, structures, forces in construction, transportation, fluid systems, thermal systems, electricity, and energy, work and power.
