How it works

A free, unofficial practice test for the Massachusetts class 1D hoisting license, for general industrial warehouse fork lifts. It is not affiliated with the Office of Public Safety and Inspections, which gives the examination, and uses none of its questions.

Where the questions come from

72 are written from 230 CMR 6.00, as amended November 21, 2025, and M.G.L. chapter 146. The other 36 come from 29 CFR 1910.178, the federal truck rule: 230 CMR 6.08 has hoisting machinery operated in compliance with 29 CFR 1910. None rests on a manufacturer's operating manual, which the Office also tells applicants to review.

  • Two numbers from 230 CMR 6.11: the incident hotline is called within one hour, and the written report follows within 48 hours.
  • A federal number worth keeping: a truck counts as unattended once its operator is 25 feet away, or out of its view at any distance.

Questions and answers

What is a 1D hoisting license in Massachusetts?

It is the Class 1 restriction for general industrial warehouse fork lift equipment primarily used in indoor facilities, in the words of 230 CMR 6.10(1)(h). Holders of 1A, 1B or 1C may run 1D equipment too. The Office's application lists forklifts under 1C as well.

Do you need a hoisting license to drive a forklift in Massachusetts?

Yes, unless an exemption applies: 230 CMR 6.09(4) lets only a licensed operator or a supervised apprentice licensee run a fork lift. 230 CMR 6.06(2)(e) exempts employees who run one exclusively on property their company owns, where the general public has no access.

What score do you need to pass the Massachusetts hoisting exam?

A minimum grade of 70% on the written examination, under 230 CMR 6.02(3)(a). The Office of Public Safety and Inspections gives the examination. Its pages, read October 12, 2026, do not say how many questions it asks.

How do you renew a 1D hoisting license?

230 CMR 6.04 asks for two classroom hours of continuing education before renewal: one of regulatory and industry standard training and one of equipment specific training. A license left unrenewed for a year after it expires comes back only by re-examination.
