Three content areas
ASWB's Examination Guidebook for exams from August 3, 2026, read October 8, 2026, weights the Clinical outline: values and ethics 36%, assessment and planning 32%, intervention and practice 32%. The 66 questions here split 24, 21 and 21.
One section on the clock

Set in the therapy room
The guidebook describes this category as clinical social work that applies specialized clinical knowledge and advanced clinical skills. So the questions are on psychotherapy notes, mandated reporting, research consent, supervision, motivational interviewing, trauma reactions, suicide risk and group work, from SAMHSA's treatment protocols and federal rules.

Who takes the ASWB Clinical exam?
The guidebook lists a master's degree in social work and two years of experience in clinical settings, or what the jurisdiction counts as equal. Your state or provincial board tells ASWB which category you are approved to take.
