What the G1 test covers

ASE's study guide lists seven areas: engine systems 9, automatic transmission 4, manual drive train and axles 6, suspension and steering 13, brakes 11, electrical 8, heating and air conditioning 4. This ASE maintenance and light repair practice test keeps those shares: 11, 5, 7, 16, 14, 10 and 5.

An ASE MLR practice test with sources

Inspection limits come from federal inspection standards and the tire, brake fluid and refrigerant rules. Service steps come from Army and Navy manuals, which do not cover scan tools or oil life monitors.

Timed or on paper

Exam mode asks 55 questions in 90 minutes. The official ASE G1 study guide PDF is free and holds the task list; this bank prints as a paper test to go with it.

  • Suspension, steering and brakes are 24 of the 55 questions. Start with tires, alignment angles and brake fluid.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the ASE G1 test?

ASE's page for G1 lists 55 scored questions plus 10 unscored research questions, in 90 minutes. You are not told which are which, so answer every one. The recertification test is 28 questions in 45 minutes.

Can I take the ASE G1 test online?

Yes, in one way. By ASE's 2026 guide to certification, a first-time G1 test may be taken at a test center or with live remote proctoring. This practice page is free and online, and it is not the real test.

Are these real ASE G1 test questions?

No. The real questions are not public. Every question here is our own, written from the task list in the ASE G1 study guide, which ASE gives away free, and from public sources. None copies its sample questions.

What is the G1 ASE test for?

ASE's page says it recognizes technicians who can perform the most common maintenance and light repair tasks. The study guide adds that students who pass eight entry-level tests in an accredited program can earn G1 without sitting it.
