What the A5 test covers
ASE's study guide splits the 45 scored questions: hydraulic, power assist and parking brake systems 19, drum brakes 5, disc brakes 11, and electronic brake control (antilock, traction and stability control) 10. This bank keeps those shares with 28, 7, 15 and 14. Wheel bearing tasks sit inside the drum and disc areas.
Where the answers come from
Limits and warning lamp rules come from the federal brake standards and the federal in-use inspection standard. Diagnosis and repair steps come from Army and Navy training manuals.
- The federal figures here are inspection limits. For a repair specification, the vehicle maker's service manual governs.
Questions and answers
Are there ASE A5 brake practice test questions that are on the actual test?
No. The real questions are not public. Every question here is our own, written from ASE's published A5 task list and public sources, and none copies the sample questions in ASE's study guide. A score here is practice only.
How many questions are on the ASE A5 brakes test?
ASE's 2026 study guide lists 55 questions in 75 minutes: 45 scored and 10 research questions that are not counted. You are not told which, so answer every one. The recertification test is 23 questions in 30 minutes.
Does the A5 test count toward Master Automobile Technician?
Yes. ASE's page says technicians certified in tests A1 to A8 are recognized as Master Automobile Technicians, and A5 Brakes is one of the eight. Technicians retest every five years to keep a certification.
