  • Some residents want the weekly market moved from Main Street to the fairgrounds, where parking is easy. I understand the appeal. But a market is more than a place to park. On Main Street, shoppers also stop at the bakery, the hardware store and the pharmacy. Move the market, and those shops lose their busiest day. Question: How does the author treat the opposing view? • A test of three work gloves counted how many cuts each survived before tearing: Glove A, 40; Glove B, 85; Glove C, 60. Glove B costs twice as much as Glove A. The testers note that all three gloves were tested dry, and that wet gloves may behave differently. Question: Which glove survived the most cuts? How this list was compiled: Our own texts and questions, written to the TABE 13&14 Reading Blueprint, Level D, of Data Recognition Corporation (https://tabetest.com/PDFs/TABE1314_BluePrint_ReadD.pdf, read 2026-10-07): key ideas and details 45.5%, craft and structure with vocabulary 40.9%, integration of knowledge and ideas 13.6%. The bank holds 20 questions, split 9, 8 and 3, on five short texts written for this page: a memo, a letter, a story, a test report and a pair of reports. Every place, person and number in them is made up, and each text holds the answer to its questions. The real Level D reading test has 39 questions in two parts of 50 minutes (https://tabetest.com/PDFs/TABE_13-14_Test_Max_Test_Times.pdf). Licence: Questions, choices, texts and explanations are original work of this site.

What Level D asks

Mathematics leans on negative numbers, ratios and percents, equations with x, circles, the Pythagorean theorem and probability. Language asks you to choose the best wording for an argument or a report more often than it asks about commas. Reading asks for the claim, the evidence and the author's purpose.

How to practice

Mathematics and Language are full length here, with as many questions as the real Level D tests ask. Your score comes back by part of the blueprint, so you see whether algebra or geometry needs the work.

Not sure you are at Level D?

The TABE practice test runs from Level E to Level A in each subject and shows where your answers start to go wrong. One level down: TABE Level M practice test.

  • The Level D reference sheet gives the area and circumference of a circle and the Pythagorean theorem: learn to use them, not to recite them.
  • A level is set subject by subject. Level D in mathematics does not mean Level D in reading.

Questions and answers

What is Level D on the TABE test?

It is the third of four levels: E, M, D and A. The standards on the Level D blueprints carry the codes of grades 6, 7 and 8. The publisher's Locator Test shows which level to take in each subject.

How many questions are on the TABE test Level D?

In TABE 13&14, Level D has 40 mathematics questions in parts of 45 and 15 minutes, 33 language questions in 50 minutes, and 39 reading questions in two parts of 50 minutes each.

What is a passing score at Level D?

There is none from the publisher, which says it does not set or recommend cut scores. The school, employer or program that sent you decides the score it asks for, so ask them.
