How this list was compiled: Our own questions, written to Part Two: Mathematics (field 232) of the NYSTCE Multi-Subject: Teachers of Middle Childhood (Grade 5–Grade 9) (231/232/245) Assessment Design and Framework, October 2017 (https://www.nystce.nesinc.com/content/docs/NY_fld231_232_245_objs.pdf, read 2026-10-14): Number Systems 9 selected-response items, Algebra and Functions 17, Measurement, Geometry, Statistics, and Probability 14. The bank holds the same 9, 17 and 14. Every answer is mathematics worked from what the question prints, and each was worked out a second time on 2026-10-14. How it works

This NYSTCE Multi-Subject 5-9 practice test has two sets of our own questions: literacy and English language arts (231) and mathematics (232). It is unofficial and has no tie to the New York State Education Department or Pearson, which neither endorse nor sponsor it.

What each set follows

The framework of October 2017 gives Part One 17 questions on knowledge of literacy and language arts, 17 on teaching foundational literacy skills and 6 on teaching English language arts. Part Two has 9 on number systems, 17 on algebra and functions and 14 on measurement, geometry, statistics and probability. Each set here holds the same numbers.

The clock

The framework plans up to 60 minutes for the 40 selected-response questions of Part One and 75 for those of Part Two; a timed run here uses the same clocks. Each real part adds one written response, which this page does not mark.

Part Three

Arts and Sciences (245) has its own 40-question set on the CST Multi-Subject practice test.

  • The real Part Two supplies an on-screen scientific calculator and a formulas page, both linked from the test's own page.

Questions and answers

What is on the NYSTCE Multi-Subject 5-9 test?

Three parts: literacy and English language arts (231), mathematics (232) and arts and sciences (245). Parts One and Two each have 40 selected-response questions and one written response. Part Three has 40 selected-response questions and no writing.

What is the passing score for the Multi-Subject 5-9 CST?

The test's own page gives 520 for each part and says all three parts must be taken and passed to qualify for certification in this field. A scaled score is not a count of right answers.

Is the Multi-Subject 5-9 test different from the 7-12 test?

In mathematics, yes. The 7-12 framework plans 5 questions on number and quantity, 20 on algebra and functions and 15 on geometry and statistics: fewer on number and more on algebra than this test's 9, 17 and 14.

Do you retake Part Three for a second Multi-Subject certificate?

No. The NYSTCE site says Part Three is shared by all four Multi-Subject tests, so a candidate seeking more than one Multi-Subject certificate needs to pass Part Three only once.
